Exclusive: Audit Commission stands down on CAA
Heather Jameson
The Audit Commission is poised to announce all work surrounding the Comprehensive Area Assessments (CAA) will stop immediately, The MJ has learned.
While the Government has announced it will scrap CAA, no action has been taken as yet to stop the process.Legislation will be required to stop the process completely, but in the meantime councils have been in limbo over the process.
But LocalGov.co.uk sister title The MJ has learned that the commission is due to make an announcement tomorrow, which will call a halt to any planned meetings which were scheduled on the inspection system.
Councils will also be able to drop their self-assessment work on the CAA process.
In a statement, Audit Commission managing director for local government, Gareth Davies, told The MJ: ‘On Friday (27 May) we will be writing to LSPs and other organisations to inform them how we propose to bring work on CAA to a conclusion in the light of the government's recent announcement.’

In London Alison, we have been told to stop anything on use of resources assessment.

Attended Blackpool Overview & Scrutiny meeting to receive this welcome news, as it was a waste of time. The trouble is we will also lose the funding to pay for it, and be no better off. The persons who will suffer are the Council workers who will lose their jobs.

It would also be good to know if this means we are not going ahead with the Place Survey in the autumn. That will free up some cash towards our ABG cut.

The full scope of this announcement is not yet clear. Does the scrapping of CAA also include the Managing Performance assessment of councils and the Use of Resources assessment of councils?
