Ministers push for energy-from-waste take up

Nick Appleyard

The Government has released £10m to boost the take up of energy-from-waste facilities through demonstration sites.

Environment secretary Hillary Benn announced the funds alongside his department’s plan to boost biogas production from anaerobic digestion (AD).

"Anaerobic digestion has fantastic potential because it uses organic material that would otherwise be thrown away and converts it into renewable energy."

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) implementation plan sets out actions to help local authorities and businesses to adopt the technology.

In addition, financial incentives such as grants will be offered in order to encourage councils to explore the latest technology in a bid to tackle climate change and produce renewable energy.

Mr Benn said: ‘Anaerobic digestion has fantastic potential because it uses organic material that would otherwise be thrown away and converts it into renewable energy.

‘I’ve already seen great examples of this technology in use around the country and the implementation plan we are publishing today will help speed up its use across the economy. We should aim to become world leaders in the innovative use of AD.’
