Londoners wait to hear on Olympic ticket allocations

Joe Mason

The London Olympics organising committee has promised to release more details about ticket allocations ‘later this year’.

It follows concern that Londoners will not receive preferential treatment ahead of international customers when tickets for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games go on sale.

A spokeswoman for the organising committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) told LocalGov: ‘There will be over nine million tickets available for both Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and we will issue more details of our approach later this year.’

Earlier this week, it emerged that Londoners – who are funding the Games through local and national taxation – are unlikely to gain access to tickets for events prior to the rest of the world.

‘Like everyone – including other Olympic Games held in Europe – we are subject to European Union laws and regulations concerning the sale of tickets which means we cannot restrict their sale within the EU,’ the spokeswoman explained.

Tickets will go on sale to Europeans in 2011 – and there are also concerns about the costs involved.

Prestigious events, such as the opening and closing ceremonies, could cost up to £1,000 per ticket for the 80,000-seater stadium in Stratford. This may also make it difficult for Britons to support national athletes on home soil.

Fears are also growing over the number of tickets that will be given to the Games’ officials, sponsors, athletes and media - including places at the opening and closing ceremonies.
