DfT probed over 'missing' Heathrow emails

Robin Mannering

The Department for Transport faces an investigation by the information commissioner over allegations it deleted sensitive emails about the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Conservative MP Justine Greening used a Freedom of Information request to obtain emails sent between the DfT and airport operator BAA. She said there were gaps in email exchanges over a three-month period in late 2007, with one response missing to a DfT question asking: ‘Can we play down?’.

The deletion of the emails could be a criminal offence under the Freedom of Information Act.

A spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office said: ‘We are looking into allegations made by Justine Greening MP concerning requests for information to the Department for Transport. We have contacted BAA and DfT to help us establish the full facts.’

A DfT spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of a possible investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office, but have not received any formal notice.

‘The Department has received a number of FOI cases in relation to expansion at Heathrow, and we believe they have all been handled responsibly and in accordance with the Act.’
