Cumbria floods spark cash and help call

An urgent call for emergency government cash and a round-the-clock disaster response followed the devastating floods in Cumbria.

Jill Stannard, named as the new chief executive for Cumbria CC just last week, was in the frontline of a civil emergency after severe weather led to the flooding.

More than 30 bridges and roads were shut because of the flooding, and Ms Stannard has been in talks with ministers to secure funds for the area and has sought to reassure residents.

‘We have been reaching people over the weekend. People get very frightened – totally understandably, because this is very traumatic,’ she said.

Prime minister, Gordon Brown, said the Government would do ‘whatever it can’ to help the community when he visited the region, and communities secretary, John Denham, announced £1m to help people immediately, alongside a review of 1,800 bridges in the county.

Areas of Scotland, Wales and the Midlands were also hit by torrential downpours, a young womans’s body has been discovered in the river Usk and more rain was forecasted by the Met Office as The MJ went to press, prompting the Environment Agency to warn of further flooding.
