London transport projects to be sacrificed for Crossrail, says Boris

Major capital transport projects in London are likely to be dropped due to a lack of funding and in favour of pursuing Crossrail and tube improvements.

As a £230M funding package from BAA toward the £16bn Crossrail project was announced this week, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson stated that there is not enough ‘cash to do everything we would like’ in terms of major transport projects.

In his ‘Way to Go’ paper, which sets out his vision for transport in the capital, Johnson says ‘one thing we cannot do is spend tens of millions keeping projects alive, for political reasons, when there is simply no government funding to deliver them’.

The Crossrail project, which he describes as ‘vital’ to the future of the city, is guaranteed to go ahead.

A spokesman for the Mayor’s office confirmed that a number of projects would be dropped under Transport for London’s business plan for the next 10 years. The plan was discussed at a TfL board meeting this week and is due to be published.

Crossrail will provide direct services from Heathrow airport through central London, the City and Canary Wharf and out to Shenfield and Abbey Wood.

New stations will be created at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and the Isle of Dogs (Canary Wharf).

Too much sacrifice for Crossrail go ahead....a relocation of Westbourne Bus Garage to a residential area, with its entrance bang opposite the Barlby Primary School entrance, with its 155 buses and 100,000 litre fuel tank within a few feet of our homes, operating hours that will give us between 2am and 4am some time to sleep without the revving of engines, unacceptable congestion on an important emergency services route, a blight to our community. Dont trample all over us to get your agenda across.

Hopefully one of the projects they drop is relocating London Transport's Bus depot: to within a few meters from our homes in North Kensington and mere feet from the entrance of Barlby Road school. 150 buses firing up each day starting at 3am. 150 buses rumbling by the doors of a school. The main route for ambulances at the hospital, blocked. Strangely there's an old gas works very near by that they're refusing to consider. Good ol' Crossrail. Dumping on homes, messing with children!
