Some top UK cities ‘fail to market their assets’

Some of Britain’s biggest councils, including Sheffield and Cardiff, are under-selling their cities internationally, according to a study by marketing experts.

However, the report by Saffron Brand Consultants claimed other British cities – including Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle – were in danger of overplaying their attractions.

The study claimed London was the UK’s only ‘world class’ city, when measured by its public appeal, assets and marketability.

The capital finished second in Saffron’s unofficial league table, behind Paris.

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Liverpool, however, also featured in the top 30. All three cities were said to be more appealing places to visit than other major European cities deemed to have better assets, such as Sofia and Hamburg.

But consultants believed Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol had over-aggressively marketed their revivals and could soon be surpassed by rising European centres.
