Dundee honours Beano school gang

Dundee City Council is considering plans to name a street in the city’s west end after Beano regulars The Bash Street Kids.

Proposed by publishers D C Thomson who are based in the city, plans for ‘Bash Street’ are currently undergoing a consultation period with views set for return by 16 November.

The launch is designed to coincide with the weekly comic’s 75th anniversary next year.

A council spokesman said: ‘Dundee City Council has received a request from D C Thomson to allocate the name Bash Street to the street adjacent to 142/144 West Marketgait, which currently has no name.

‘This is to tie-in with the proposed new build and to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Beano in 2013 in the comic's hometown. There is a proposal for a children's soft play area within the former works buildings off West Marketgait.’

City development convener Will Dawson said: ‘I think it's braw. Historically Dundee has such a massive history with D C Thomson and the characters that have been produced. We've already got Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx in the centre and it's good to tie in the Bash Street Kids.

'We've got to make these historic connections. There's another plan to put Glebe Street back on the map. It used to exist in the city and it ties in with the Broons too,' Dawson added.
