Sunderland scoops top MJ award

Mike Burton

Sunderland City Council tonight received the accolade of being judged the Best Achieving Council in the UK at The MJ awards.

The council was one of 16 local authority winners chosen from 102 finalists in 16 different categories announced by presenter and BBC political editor Nick Robinson at a glittering gala night at London’s Hilton Hotel on Park Lane attended by nearly 900 guests.

The judges said that Sunderland has ‘long been a high performing council, and its significant achievements, often unsung ones, have deservedly made it an all-round winner for the Best Achieving Council of 2012.’ The judges were also highly impressed with the council’s leadership on economic growth and its ability to recognise when to lead and when to partner and support.

Michael Burton, The MJ’s editorial director, said: ‘Judging by the extraordinary number of entries – the highest we have ever received in the nine years of the awards -  and the great turnout and atmosphere at our awards gala night, council managers and members are determined to be optimistic about the future.

They are clearly proud of their innovative services and at producing them when funding has been so squeezed.’

Full details of winners can be found at awards.themj.co.uk from Friday morning, June 22.
