Affordable homes strategy unveiled
Councils have told the Government what they need to help them build more affordable homes – and boost the building industry through the recession.
Councils outlined the key obstacles to boosting their house-building at a House of Commons event, organised by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) and the Association of Retained Council Housing (ARCH).
Council managers insisted that, if they were given the money and freedoms to build local homes, it would boost the ailing construction industry and keep trades-people in work during the recession.
APSE chief executive, Paul O’Brien, said: ‘Councils have land ready for development, good credit ratings, are democratically accountable and ideally placed to link building with wider social, economic and environmental goals.’
