Article of The Day

Hansard

Hansard, also known as the Official Report, is the official record of proceedings in Parliament. Records are made for the main Chamber of the House of Commons, Westminster Hall and Standing Committees.

These reports are impartial accounts; Hansard is a department of the House of Commons and independent of the Government and the Civil Service.

Hansard reporters sit in the Press Gallery to take their reports. The reports are essentially verbatim but are edited to remove repetitions and correct obvious mistakes while ensuring that nothing is left out that adds to the meaning of the speech or illustrates the argument.

Hansard is printed overnight and made available by 8 am the next morning both in print and online.
