Council workers at Hove Town Hall had to be evacuated yesterday following a fire on the rooftop.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Brighton and Hove City Council building following reports of smoke from the town hall in Norton Road.
The fire - thought to be caused by an electrical fault with a solar panel on the roof - was soon brought under control.
A statement from the council said: ‘Hove Town Hall is currently being renovated and only a few staff and building contractors were inside at the time. Everyone was immediately evacuated and no one has been harmed.’
The council said an investigation into the incident was already underway, and it would check all solar panels on all council buildings as a result.
