Sheffield schools are to have a fixed Easter break after a consultation found parents and teachers to be ‘overwhelmingly’ in favour of the plan.
The 2017/18 academic year will have a fixed Easter break in the first two weeks of April so that the half-terms in spring and summer are more even in length.
1,200 parents, teachers and support staff responded to the council’s consultation with nearly three quarters (71%) in favour of the change.
Feedback from the consultation highlighted that long terms can lead to tired children, while the shorter spring terms do not give children the necessary preparation time they need for their exams.
‘We want all our children and young people to achieve their full potential by enabling them all to have the best opportunities to learn,’ Cllr Jackie Drayton, cabinet member for children, young people and families at Sheffield City Council, said.
‘We believe, by changing to a two week fixed Easter break , this will mean that they will have the best chance to do well in the Spring and Summer terms.’
