Towns and cities across the UK are being encouraged to declare themselves social enterprise hotspots.
National body Social Enterprise UK has extended a programme designed to highlight those with significant activity and encourage them to do more.
During its pilot phase Social Enterprise Places awarded the special status to Plymouth, Bristol, Digbeth, Cornwall and Alston Moor in Cumbria. Following support from Santander, the scheme is now being rolled out nationally.
Peter Holbrook, Social Enterprise UK’s chief executive, said: ‘This scheme aims to bolster the UK’s growing social enterprise sector from the bottom-up.
‘Austerity is dismantling communities and local amenities, deepening the UK’s social problems. Social Enterprise Places are taking matters into their own hands, re-injecting life into their local area, creating opportunities and changing lives where it matters most.’
