Scottish Labour has proposed scrapping the ‘hated council tax’ and introducing a ‘fairer and more progressive’ tax system.
The party launched its vision for local government yesterday ahead of the council elections in May.
Deputy leader Alex Rowley called for a debate about ‘the kind of society we want, the kind of public services we want, and the kind of Scotland we all want to live in’.
He said today’s generation of Scots have the chance to ‘shape the provision and future of care services’ and the chance to ‘give young people a better future’.
Scottish Labour’s plans include a 50p top rate of income tax for the richest 1% in society and a basic rate of income tax 1p higher than that set by the UK Government.
They also proposed to get rid of the council tax and introduce a system where 80% of households pay less.
In his speech launching the party’s national framework, Mr Rowley described his vision for local government in Scotland.
‘Strong local councils accountable to local people putting those people and communities at the heart of everything they do,’ he said.
