The number of pupils in the school system has increased by 120,000 in the past year, according to official statistics.
The figures from the Department for Education (DfE) show that primary schools had the biggest rise in population, with 104,900 more pupils in January 2016 than in 2015.
The increase in school pupils has been largely attributed to the rise in migration, as nearly a third of primary school pupils are of minority ethnic origin.
Minority ethnic pupils made up 71% of the increase in pupil numbers in primary schools between 2015 and 2016.
The figures also show that the number of children eligible for free school meals has also fallen to its lowest recorded proportion at 14%.
The briefing explained: ‘The decline is occurring in a large number of areas across the country and is related to there being fewer parents than previously claiming the benefits which would make their children eligible for free school meals.’
