Love is in the chamber! Council chairman uses final speech to propose to colleague

An outgoing Lincolnshire councillor has concluded his term as chairman in an unusual fashion - by proposing to one of his colleagues.

Former chairman Martin Trollope-Bellew – also known as ‘Trolley’ – handed over the chairmanship to Cllr Andrew Hagues.

He then concluded his final speech to the chamber by asking his partner Cllr Rosemary Woolley to marry him.

Stunned, Cllr Woolley joked if she could think about it – and then said ‘yes’.

‘Wonderful first full council meeting at Lincolnshire County Council,’ wrote Cllr Kate Cook on Facebook.

’Former Chairman Martin Trollope-Bellew handed over the chairmanship to Cllr Andrew Hagues and Cllr Ron Oxby became Vice-Chair.

‘Martin Trollope-Bellew ("Trolley") then proposed to his partner Cllr Rosemary Woolley in the Council Chamber! After hesitation, she said yes!

‘All in all, a very dramatic first Council meeting!’
