A lollipop man who repeatedly stopped a fire engine on its way to an emergency call has been sacked.
An investigation was launched into the crossing patrol worker last month after reports emerged that a firefighting crew travelling to a burning tree on 13 April had been stopped on numerous occasions as schoolchildren were ushered across the road.
Luton Borough Council confirmed it has now dismissed the lollipop man on the grounds of gross misconduct.
An eyewitness said at the time the lollipop man had started walking children across the road 'when the engine was only a few yards away' then 'went back to the pavement and did it again'.
A council spokesperson said: 'Luton Borough Council has now concluded its inquiries into reports that a school crossing patrol officer held up a fire engine on an emergency call on 13 April. After following our due process, the employee concerned has been summarily dismissed on the grounds of gross misconduct.'
