Second home owners could face paying twice as much council tax under Liberal Democrat plans published today.
Measures outlined in the party’s Countryside Charter would allow local authorities to double the levy on second residences as part of efforts to help combat climbing house prices.
Further proposals designed to help rural regions thrive include ensuring countryside locations receive improved Internet connections, protections surrounding local facilities and prioritised housing.
Plans put forward by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg are expected to create over 300,000 new jobs, with support being offered for fishing communities and young people in rural settings.
Cornwall is thought to have the highest number of second properties in England and Wales, with the local authority being the first to abolish council tax discounts for holiday homes and raise levies on empty properties.
Clegg said: ‘Rural areas play a large part in Britain’s economy with the rural economy worth £210bn. The Liberal Democrats want to unlock this potential so rural areas and the rest of the UK can thrive.
‘In order to prosper, rural areas need good local services, appropriate infrastructure and more housing.
‘Only the Liberal Democrats will create a stronger economy and fairer society where everyone and every part of the UK can reach its full potential.’
