A study into how to boost recycling rates for urban areas has been launched by Keep Britain Tidy and SITA UK.
The charity is warning that recycling in England is ?flat-lining? with some major cities only achieving rates of around 15-20%. It says this could cause England to miss its EU recycling target of 50% by 2020.
The inquiry will involve members of the public, working with waste industry specialists, to develop practical solutions to improving recycling rates. These solutions will them be tested on the general public with the results published in June 2014.
Keep Britain Tidy?s campaigns and communications director, Andy Walker, said: ?'Tackling waste is something in which the public has a big role to play, but all too often, debates about recycling do not include ordinary people.'
'?These juries are an opportunity for the man, or woman, on the street to have their say on an important issue that affects us all.?' Director of external affairs for SITA UK, Dr Gev Eduljee, added: ?'With Government paring back its efforts in this area, it has placed the onus on industry to progress waste and resource policy in England.'?
A report earlier this month found that incentive schemes from councils could boost recycling rates by 8%.
