Over £8m is expected to be saved at Nottinghamshire County Council after town hall bosses approved a package of technology improvements.
Coming as part of local efforts to save £77m over the next three years, a new modernisation programme at Nottinghamshire will equip social care staff with tablet computers and improve care monitoring.
Cllr Darren Langton, vice-chairman of the county council’s finance and property committee, said the town hall was ‘leading the way nationally’ by putting technology at the centre of services.
A new electronic system for home-based care services will help improve the design of care packages – saving £2m every year – while efforts to ensure social care employees can work while on the move will create productivity benefits of £4.7m.
A new contract with Virgin Media Business to deliver broadband in council offices and schools also received backing.
Cllr Langton said: ‘By investing in new technology, we are not only saving a substantial amount of money for taxpayers, we are changing the way services are provided for the better.
‘There's still lots more to do, but by putting technology at the heart of the way we provide services we are making rapid progress.
‘Using technology to reduce our running costs helps relieve some of the extreme financial pressures on frontline services, caused by on-going cuts in funding by central Government.’
