Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset County Council have agreed a ‘satisfactory’ compensation package from Tesco following its decision not to proceed with a superstore in Northgate, Bridgwater.
The supermarket giant had originally planned to build a new 60,000 sq ft 24-hour Tesco on the site of a former swimming pool. However, the plans were met with local outcry with campaigners saying it would impact on local independent shops and green space land.
Tesco announced it was pulling out of the proposal in January 2015, and has agreed compensation for both councils.
A statement from the councils read: ‘Northgate is a hugely important site to Bridgwater and SCC and SDC has already started thinking about next steps. Firstly, both councils need to re-affirm with their members that they wish to dispose of the site.
‘Both authorities are committed to an outcome that is best for the site and the town, and which also fits with the financial and economic climate which is vastly different from that in 2008.’
