Council leaders and chiefs are being asked to give their opinions on sector-led improvement.
The Local Government Association (LGA) has launched a consultation following an evaluation of the approach last year. The evaluation revealed that two-thirds of people are ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ satisfied with the way their council runs things.
Cllr Peter Fleming, chair of the LGA’s Improvement and Innovation Board, said: ‘This consultation is an opportunity for those in local government to ensure sector-led improvement remains relevant. An independent evaluation into sector-led improvement has already taken place and we hope the consultation will build on its findings.
‘The previous top-down approach to council improvement was estimated to cost £2 billion a year, whereas sector-led improvement is locally-driven, much cheaper and more effective.’
The consultation will end in mid-March.
