Rochdale BC has welcomed the launch of a police investigation into historic child abuse connected to Knowl View School.
The council’s acting chief executive Linda Fisher said the allegations in MP Simon Danzcuk’s book Smile for the Camera must be ‘fully examined’.
Ms Fisher said: ‘We will continue to co-operate fully with the force’s enquiries, making all information available.
‘This is a positive step on the road to resolution and we are pleased the force has acted swiftly to launch a criminal investigation.
‘The people of Rochdale, the council and, most importantly, the victims need to have confidence in the process and faith that the truth will be discovered and any necessary actions taken.’
Assistant chief constable Ian Wiggett, of Greater Manchester Police, said an independent oversight panel would be established to ‘demonstrate the independence and rigour of the investigation that we will be conducting’.
