A top-five wish list of policies The Royal British Legion wants councils to implement has been drawn up by the charity.
Making ‘tangible changes’ to social housing allocations policy tops the charity’s list of ‘meaningful policies for the armed forces community’.
The charity believes the five proposed policy changes ‘could benefit the armed forces and ensure that veterans and their families don’t experience any disadvantage as a result of service’.
Director general of the charity, Chris Simpkins, said: ‘With the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the rebasing of troops from Germany, and the increasing number of reservists expected in society, support from local authorities and local communities is more important than ever.
‘We hope that councils will feel able to implement some of the policies that we’ve identified that will make a real difference to the welfare of ex-service personnel and their families.’
The charity will make its call at next week’s Local Government Association conference in Bournemouth.
