The political balance of the Local Government Association (LGA) has tipped in favour of the Conservatives following their success at last week’s local elections.
The Tories have become the largest party in the LGA after winning more than 500 seats in the local elections and gaining control of another 30 councils. The party now accounts for 40.6% of LGA members.
The new figures show Labour makes up 40% of the LGA, the Liberal Democrats account for 9.6% of members, with the remaining 10.1% being made up of other parties
‘The LGA will continue to be a united voice for councils and press the new government on the big issues and challenges that lie ahead,’ said Cllr David Sparks, Chair of the Local Government Association.
‘We will work to ensure local authorities are adequately funded and given long-term certainty through multi-year spending allocations, as well as calling for government to address the pressing need to tackle the unsustainable pressure facing our social care system.’
Cllr Sparks added the fight for the devolution of powers would continue to be a key priority for the LGA going forward.
