Groups in Aberdeen have received over £370,000 following a council shake-up of charitable trust funds.
Last year city councillors agreed to reorganise the way in which the local authority administered 52 historic charitable trusts, with many trusts dating back hundreds of years and a number benefiting groups and organisations that no longer existed.
Some 39 trusts with funds of less than £20,000 and two with combined funds of £99,000 were closed down by Aberdeen, with funds being transferred to charities with similar purposes.
Re-organisation of trusts will benefit local schemes including the Disabled Persons Housing Service (receiving £2,763), Aberdeen Seafaer’s Centre (£87,501) and Aberdeen Art Gallery Trusts (£49,329).
‘The rationalisation of these historic trusts was long overdue and has now resulted in some significant extra funding for organisations which are doing tremendous work for the people of Aberdeen,’ finance, police and resources convener, Cllr Willie Young, said.
‘I am sure the individuals who founded some of these trusts many years ago would approve of the careful and sensitive way in which we have gone about the review and would be proud of the fact that Aberdeen City Council is making sure those who are in need benefit from this modernisation.’
