Baby P council told to improve

Ofsted has told the council at the centre of the Baby P tragedy its children’s social care service requires improvement.

Inspectors also rated Haringey’s local safeguarding children’s board in the same second-from-worst category.

The report said the authority was ‘not yet delivering good protection and help and care for children, young people and families’.

It added that some children who are referred to children’s social care services where concerns related to chronic neglect ‘may not always receive timely or thorough assessments’, which leads to ‘delays in receiving a service, and in fully exploring risks and needs’.

Haringey LBC’s cabinet member for children, Cllr Ann Waters, said: ‘We wholeheartedly take on board the recommendations made by the inspectors.

‘Work is already underway on many areas for development and a detailed action plan to address the inspectors’ recommendations is being produced.’
