The council that was at the centre of the Baby P tragedy expects to break its budget for children’s services.
A Haringey LBC meeting was told that overspends were forecast in both children’s and adult services budgets – amounting to £2m and £3.5m respectively.
Senior council directors have put in place management action plans to tackle the issues.
A weekly resources panel chaired by the assistant children’s services director will be held, and tighter managerial controls and systems will be put in place.
The council’s director of children’s services said she was ‘confident’ that the current looked after children’s budget could be ‘could be effectively brought into line through tighter managerial controls’.
A report to a meeting of the council’s cabinet read: ‘Clearly, in light of the projected overspend, these areas need to be kept under close review and progress towards bringing the projections back into line with the approved budget monitored over the forthcoming months.’
